This will be an informal presentation and discussion on mathematical modeling. It is based on my experience of over 25 years as a finals judge for the international contest, the COMAP Mathematical Competition in Modeling (MCM). Especially, I have stories to share in connection with the several contest problems I wrote over the years. I offer advice to future participants, based on judging the bathtub problem for the 2016 MCM.
个人简介：Jerrold R. Griggs南卡罗莱纳大学教授。1977年于MIT取得数学博士学位，研究方向包括极值组合，图论，以及离散数学在生物，数论， 分析算法和通信上的应用。自1988年以来每年都担任数学建模竞赛的评审，并多次为美赛出题，并参与评审，多篇美赛特等奖论文均经他手。在他看来美赛实为由竞赛团队用数学模型来解决现实问题，是一场由百余支顶级队伍展示论文的专业会议。
